In cancerworld some small things can bring deep comfort. For many of us, good socks are one of those comforting things. Aloe infused socks. Fuzzy socks. Alpaca socks. Handknit socks. Cushioned wool socks. Socks made for diabetics that help us too.
Many of us will experience neuropathy in our feet as a result of treatment. Neuropathy is the feeling you get when your feet have fallen asleep (you know, that tingling feeling). For some folks this may also be accompanied by pain. Kind of like it feels when you walk across rocks barefoot. For some of us that may be permanent. For some it is temporary. The good news is that, although there is pain, the feeling is not causing our feet damage. (For a more detailed description of neuropathy try: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/peripheral-neuropathy/symptoms-causes/syc-20352061#:~:text=Peripheral%20neuropathy%20happens%20when%20the,functions%20including%20digestion%20and%20urination. )
Never underestimate the mood lifting potential in small things. Socks. Good chapstick. A water bottle that makes you want to hydrate. Twinkly lights. Whenever you stumble across these small gifts it is okay to embrace them. Enjoy them. Hang onto that positive experience as long as you want. Savor it.
Note to caregivers and friends: Socks make an excellent encouragement gift. And many of them carry fun messages.
This might also be true for non cancerworld residents.
