It may feel counterintuitive to include a note about smiling in a cancerworld document. Seriously, what is there to smile about in this land? However, recent studies have shown that the physical act of smiling may actually “trick” our brains into happiness and boost our mood. (See articles in publications like Forbes, NBC News, Science Daily, Psychology Today.)
I am not saying that we need to smile so other people feel more comfortable about our travels through cancerworld. How they deal with our journey through this wilderness is their business and not our responsibility. I might be saying that, by training our faces to “default” to smiling, we may help ourselves. And that little tiny boost that we get may help us walk the next couple of steps through the cancerworld landscape.
And, it might make people wonder what we are up to. Which is a kind of amusement that could distract us from the pits of doom we regularly encounter in cancerworld. And distractions can be a gift…one of the many things that can help us get to the next island of safety in the tricky landscape of cancerworld.
This technique might be helpful outside cancerworld as well.
